CHARACTER INFO

• Character Name: Orson Callan Krennic
• Character Age: 51
• Character Canon: Star Wars
• Canon Point: After the alliance flyover on the planet Eadu, at the moment he turns to board the transport to evacuate after looking over his shoulder and spending a moment watching Galen Erso's body.

• Character History: here.

• Character Personality:

— Positive Trait: INTELLIGENT. Krennic is shown throughout his life to be an incredibly gifted engineer and architect -- a prodigy, he attends the Galactic Republic's Young Futures program for gifted students and begins to study architectural design and engineering starting in his mid teens. He graduates with high honors, is recruited by the Grand Army of the Republic when his skills catch its attention, and by his early to mid twenties, he's an officer in the Corps of Engineers and has designed spaceports and other large pieces of critical infrastructure in space, which would require in addition to his architectural knowledge a very intimate understanding of aeronautical & mechanical engineering and space physics. Although Galen Erso and his engineers are responsible for fuel cell engineering on the Death Star, the majority of what is arguably the most formidable and complex weapon in the Star Wars universe is Krennic's life's work.
— Positive Trait: CHARISMATIC. Despite the callousness lying below the surface, Krennic is well-liked from his earliest known years. He has many lovers starting in his teenage years and well into his thirties, easily establishes rapport with important members of the Republic's Strategic Weapons Advisory Committee, and is an effective leader who oversees thousands of subordinates. This is a very calculated, deliberate facade that shows little of the cold disposition that lies beneath; he weaponizes his social skills, physical appearance, and charm to such a degree that even his instructors in engineering school note it in their reviews of him.
— Positive Trait: PERCEPTIVE. Krennic is incredibly perceptive of the emotions of the people around him in a way that puts him almost on par with empathic species like Equani in the larger Star Wars universe - his understanding of human emotion is a very clinical one, and he catalogues an individual's body language, memorizing their minute tells and behavioral patterns. His ability to sift out exactly what a person wants or needs to hear and then present it in a way that isn't obviously currying favor has allowed him to play military politics very, very well over his career, and in one scene in the prequel novel, he's shown to be able to accurately predict how an influential character will physically respond to what he's saying.

— Negative Trait: REMORSELESS. Orson canonically does not feel remorse or guilt. In his backstory, the Rogue One film, and the Rogue One: Catalyst novel, he never once feels anything close to guilt/remorse in innumerable situations in which a normal person would–harming and lying to his only close attachment over a period of many years, flippantly ordering strikes on civilian-dense areas such as parts of the planet Vallt without being remotely bothered by it, and, in the film, even destroying the so-called ‘holy city’ of Jedha and all of the clergy and civilians within it to demonstrate the power of the Death Star. As Orson watches the mushroom cloud spread after the detonation on the screen in the command room, he shows only wonder, captivated by the flames and smoke, and only utters: ”It’s beautiful” in reference to the spreading plume. Given that we see him wrong other people both in very proximal, personal ways (as with his one friend) and from a distance on a much more massive scale, and he shows zero remorse, guilt, or even apprehension over either of these modes of harm, it’s safe to conclude that he wholly lacks the capacity for these feelings.
— Negative Trait: CALLOUS. In Orson’s world, other people exist as inanimate objects to be used to further his aims and to be discarded if/when he feels like it. He's shown to lack compassion and empathy; we see him exposed to quite a few situations that would evoke sympathy and compassion in other people and in all of them he is completely unreactive–being told that his only friend’s wife has died, when he briefly (over a matter of seconds) says he’s sorry in a way that’s very obviously put on, only to then order a house search; ignoring his best friend’s wife and showing her no sympathy whatsoever despite her having just been freed from over a year of imprisonment with a young baby to care for—and he's able to unflinchingly kill.
— Negative Trait: MANIPULATIVE. The dark side of Orson's charisma and perception are that he uses them to manipulate the people around him quite liberally. This is most readily apparent in how he treats those who are closest to him; when Galen Erso is detained abroad and Krennic wants his help with the Death Star, for example, Krennic actually tells the company that Erso is a contractor for not to rescue him so that the Republic can conduct a prisoner exchange to liberate him (and his wife and daughter) instead, with himself at the forefront of the push. Orson is playing the long game here, deliberately setting things up so that Galen will feel gratitude toward him and the Republic and desire to repay it. In that same relationship, he also outright deceives Galen as to what his research is going to be used for - something nonviolent - because he knows that Galen would never go willingly if he knew the truth.
